Volunteer Opportunities in International Health
American Friends Service Committee AFSC works in the U.S. and other countries to promote peace, social change and humanitarian service while assisting the victims of social, economic and political oppression and war. In Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, AFSC workers conduct programs of social and technical assistance designed to enable people to realize their own their own power and resources. American Jewish World Service AJWS is a not-for-profit organization founded to alleviate human suffering, poverty, hunger, and disease among the people of the world, regardless of race, religion or nationality. Through the Jewish Volunteer Corps. AJWS places professional Jewish men and women on short-term volunteer assignments with local grassroots non-government organizations throughout the developing world. JVC volunteers provide direct service, technical assistance and training to host organizations and communities. Christian Medical & Dental Associations Christian and non-Christian volunteers serve on medical teams in underserved communities in developing countries for one to two week periods. Most opportunities are in Central and South America with some sites in Africa and Asia. Cross Cultural Solutions This organization offers opportunities in grasssroots projects in India, Ghana, Peru, China and Russia. Projects lie in health care, education, the arts and more. Length of commitment is determined by the volunteer and may be from 2 weeks to 6 months. Volunteers attend an intensive orientation before beginning work; no specific skills or experience are required. Volunteers provide their own airfare and pay a tax-deductible program fee, that varies according to site and length of stay and covers all program expenses while in the host country. Doctors of the World Volunteer positions are open to state-licensed, board-eligible medical doctors and other health professionals, including midwives. Assignments can be as short as one month or as long as two years. There are no language requirements. Overseas experience is a plus. Doctors Without Borders Doctors Without Borders is the world's largest independent emergency medical organization whose humanitarian missions provide relief to victims of disasters and hardship throughout the world. The organization seeks midwives for 6 months to 1-year assignments and particularly seeks individuals with international experience and foreign language skills. Family Health International The Family Health International internship program provides students an opportunity to better understand the international dimension of research and technical assistance programs, and enhances skill development. This is a summer program for graduate students with applications due in March. It provides interns with practical experience working on projects in reproductive health and AIDS programs. In addition, opportunities to work in FHI field offices may be arranged on a case by case basis. Health Volunteers Overseas Health Volunteers Overseas is dedicated to improving the availability and quality of health care in developing countries through training and education . HVO sends volunteer doctors, dentists, nurses and physical therapists to established programs in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Central and South America and in the Caribbean. In 2002, HVO sent over 350 volunteer to teach and train local health care providers in the following health care specialties: Anesthesia, Dentistry, Dermatology, Hand Surgery, Internal Medicine, Nursing, Nurse Anesthesia, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedics, Pediatrics and Physical Therapy. International Medical Services for Health (INMED) INMED is a non-profit organization that improves health and quality of life for disadvantaged people worldwide. The internship opportunities are preferably set for graduate training in public health, health systems, maternal and child health, social work, nursing and child development. International Rescue Committee Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is the leading private, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services to refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict throughout the world. Mercy Corps International Mercy Corps International is a nonprofit voluntary organization that exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. Mercy Corps pursues its mission through emergency relief services, sustainable community development and civil society initiatives. Sectors emphasized include health, agriculture, environment, housing and infrastructure and microenterprise. Northwest Medical Teams International Northwest Medical Teams is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that responds to people in crisis around the world by sending volunteer medical and nonmedical teams, humanitarian aid, community development and children's ministry programs. United States Peace Corps - Health Projects 1.800.424.8580 As part of its on-going effort to bring more skilled and knowledgeable Volunteers to the field, the Peace Corps is reaching out to Health Care and Public Health professionals who are interested in new and challenging opportunities or considering alternatives to traditional retirement. Currently, there is a high demand for trained health educators, care givers, and dedicated persons to serve in Central and South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia. The SHARE Institute The SHARE Institute works collaboratively with local and global partner organizations to improve the health and well being of women and families. The Institute conducts community assessments and provides assistance in social and health related research and education. Interns and volunteers assist Institute staff in their work with other non-profit and women-centered nongovernmental organizations around the world. Visions in Action Visions in Action works in six countries in Africa and in Mexico. They perform public health related services such as HIV/AIDS education in cooperation with indigenous non-governmental organizations. Assignments are usually six months to one year in length. There is also a 9-week summer program. The 2002 summer program is located in Tanzania. |
