Indian Health Service (IHS) Invitational Gathering on Indigenous Birthing & Midwifery

May 2008, Washington, DC

Key Issues: Issues impact the many ACNM members who work with indigenous populations.  For example, many ACNM members work with: Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians & Native American Indians, and midwives provide care to more Native Americans than any other population.

International Confederation of Midwives (ICM)

May 2008, Glasgow, Scotland
The ICM Council Meeting was attended by 138 delegates from 75 midwifery professional associations from 65 countries worldwide.
Key Issues: Consideration of new ICM vision and mission statements, governance structure including voting for board members, strategic planning and prioritization of goals for the next triennium, selection of the host association for 2014, and consideration of over 25 new or revised position statements.
The ICM Triennial Congress was attended by more than 3,400 midwives from over 90 countries. There were over 80 exhibitors, including ACNM, and 140 educational sessions with presenters from just about every continent.
Guest speakers included Princess Anne, patron of the Royal College of Midwives; Princess Muni of Jordan; and Sarah Brown, wife of the Prime Minister of the UK.

National Coalition on Health Care (NCHC)

May 2008, Washington, DC
Key Issues: The Rand Corporation is developing the COMPARE Initiative which will provide an ongoing evaluation of the effects of health policy changes on multiple dimensions. It will develop models to estimate changes on spending, health, and consumer financial risk that would occur over the next 20 years and compare that to the status quo in policy.

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Fetal Heart Rate Consensus Meeting

April 2008, Bethesda, MD
Key Issue: The NICHD 1996 consensus conference resulted in a publication that defined terms for specific FHR patterns. This document was revised and will be published in the Sept/Oct issue of the Green Journal and JOGNN. CNMs will want to follow these updated recommended management suggestions.
