Port in the Storm - Expanded Practice Opportunities

One of the things ACNM is doing regarding professional liability is to try to create "safe harbors" - new and expanded practice opportunities for our members.

Two areas of focus have been Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and hospitalists.

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC's)

The number of CNMs working FQHCs is growing!  See the Federally Qualified Health Centers Resource Packet to read about midwives working in FQHCs.  (Also see the QuickInfo on FQHCs).

The Number of FTEs and Encounters for CNMs from 2002 - 2005

   FTEs  Encounters
 2005 365.41  895,281
 2004 349.73
 808,425
 2003 333.16

 2002 330.37

CNM Hospitalists

More and more CNMs are finding positions as "laborists" or "hospitalists," covering triage and labor & delivery as a hospital employee, with the hospital paying for liability insurance.
