Resource Packet: Evaluating and Responding to Certified Professional Midwifery Legislation in Your State

MEDIA ATTENTION:

Direct entry legislation invariably leads to press and media attention. The reputation of all midwives will be impacted by any articles that discuss this legislation.

Because the move to license CPMs is closely tied to improving access to home birth, the public often concludes, again, that you cannot get care from a midwife unless you want a home birth.

It is critically important that the local chapter has a media relations plan. The ACNM Communications Department is available to assist in the development of this plan and to speak with members and chapters in response to press inquiries about DEM and legislative efforts.

Key messages include:

Refer to the principles: In order to ensure public safety, ACNM supports mandatory licensing and regulation of health care providers.
There is consumer demand for health care providers to be educated in a way that is consistent with national standards, to be certified by a nationally recognized body, and to be regulated to ensure compliance with national standards.
CNMs/CMs practice in hospitals, birth centers, and in the home.
There is existing legislation that recognizes CNMs in all 50 states.

Local chapters may also refer reporters to national office staff.
